Dear Senator Thurmond:
I would like to ask for your help and guidance on a problem in our area. Tega Cay, South Carolina is located on a peninsula with one ingress / egress to the City.
(See enclosed map.) The area color coded yellow is of particular concern to us.
It is a,one (1) mile, two (2) l lane road. Our main thoroughfare T:ga Cay Drive is a four lane street l
which feeds into the two (2) lane G*1d Hi,ll Road /Tega Cay Road, thus l
forming a bottle neck in times of crisis traffic.

The portion of the map color coded blue is part of a ten to twenty (10 - 20) year State SHIMS (Strategie Highway Plan for Improving Mobility and Safety) project for a Highway 160 by-pass around the Towm of Fort Mill.
l By our projections, in seven to ten (7 - 10) years Tega Cay wi13 have a population of approximately 10.000 residents.
There is a 200 room motel / Conference Center slated for completion by December 1990. Our l
City is situated within two miles of Catawba Nuclear Power Station.
Also, we are on the primary landing / departing routes of Charlotte International Airport.
Further, large trucks t.nd numerous motorists use Highway 160 as a cut from Interstate 77 to Interstate 85 south and also as an alternate route to the airport.
This road also serves as a back door to Carowinds Theme Park and PTL (Heritage) Theme Park.
l As a City conscious of planning for the future, we are very concerned due to the possible dangers that surround us each day.
Should a nuclear or airplane disaster occur, expeditious evacuation of our residents would be virtually impossible because of our road situation.
As cities are not allowed to spend monies for upgrading streets and l
roads outside their jurisdiction, we are at the mercy of state and I

federal governments.
Stalemated, State highway officials give little hope of their being able to assist in funding for some years. Our major developer has expressed his willingness to participate in the cost of the environmental study and preliminary engineering in order to s:tpedite the widening of Gold Hill /Tega Cay Road to no less than four (4) lanes,,
We are wondering if perhaps the Nuclear Regulatory Board.has some requirements concerning evacuation routes that would f3rce Duke Power (Catawba Nuclear Station), the State of South Carolina or some federal agency to assist us with this situation which concerns.us deeply.
1 have long been a staunch supporter of your programs, and I am now asking for your assistance on behalf of the City of Tega Cay. Please give us any information your office can provide.as to which governmental agency we might contact for aid in bettering our road L
situation.
