Dear Mr. Tucker:

TRIP RELIABILITY - ON-LINE FUNCTIONAL TESTING OF THE REACTOR TRIP SYSTEM, MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS'1 AND 2 (TACS 53997 AND 53998)

Generic Letter 83-28, Item 4.5.3, required confirmation from all licensees and applicants that. on-line functional testing of the reactor trip system, including independent testing of the diverse trip feature, was being performed. 3 By letters dated November 4,1983 and May 24, 1985, you submitted responses to Generic Letter 83-28, Item 4.5.3. Therein you ' indicated your endorsement of

The NRC staff, with the assistance of our contractor, Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, has reviewed your response and the Westinghouse Owners' Group report. We I conclude that the existing intervals.for on-line functional testing at McGuire are consistent with achieving high reactor trip system availability.

The enclosed safety evaluation and contractor',s report (EGG-NTA 8341) provide the details and basis for our conclusion. Therefore, we consider Generic ,

Letter 83-28, Item 4.5.3 to be complete. I i
