4 ru This is an application for renewal of license number SNM-256

'(current expiration date 6/30/82). The special nuclear material, five 1 curie PuBe neutron sources, and 10 argonaut reactor type fuel plates, are detailed on the attached sheets.

The 10 argonaut reactor fuel plates are kept in a locked safe in a limited access room.

Four of the' five PuBe sources are kept and used in a Nuclear Chicago neutron howitzer and the other is in a wax-filled source box (like a howitzer) and both are in a limited access room. The PuBe sources are leak tested using acetone and water swipes ccunted on a alpha scintillation counter every six months.

A nominal 1/10 pC Po210 source is the alpha standard. The leak test records are maintained in our central record keeping file in the Office of Safety and Health Services (OSHS).

213.78 gas Fifteen fuel plates were received at KrU on November 12, 1965 amt in early January 1977, five fuel plates (#12-6,12-7,13-2, 13-3, and 13-5) were sent back to United Nuclear Corporation for scrap U recovery (they were received there on 1/21/77) at Fuel Recovery Operations, Wood River Junction. RI. The five were sent back to make our special nuclear material holdings less than 300 grams.

The remaining ten plates shown above are owned by MIU via an AEC grant of Feb. 1973.

.The fuel place nominal dimensions are 1/8" thick x 3" wide x 1

24" high.
