Office of Occupational Safety and Health Services 906/487-2118 November 23, 1987 Materials Licensing Section United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road - Building 4 Glen Ellyn, IL. 60137.

Dear Sir:

This is a.. request by letter format for. reneral of License No. SNM-256.

Our SNM consists ' of 10 argonaut type reactor fuel' plates containing a total

~

of 200 grams of U235, and five PuBe neutron sources (containing one curie of Pu each). Our procedures for the material control and each testing remain as described in our existing license.

One change f rom the existing license follows. We have changed the initial response to'any accident. The University has established a common procedure and that is the Department of Public Safety is notified by dialing.

1-2-3.

If the incident was related to radioactive material, they would contact the Radiation Safety Officer through the OSHS office.

We are planning to dispose of the 10 argonaut fuel plates and possibly one of the PuBe sources during the next license period, but this renewal application includes them because there is insufficient time to arrange for their correct disposal (material transfer). We will be left with four neutron sources in a Nuclear Chicago type neutron howitzer for neutron activation work.

This application for license renewal was prepared by Donald Daavettila and David Leddy.

S inc'e re ly,

David G. Leddy Director Occupational Safety and Health Services d
