Dear Mr. Cottle:
SUBJECT:
GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION (GGNS), UNIT 1. SALEM ATWS EVENTS, GENERIC LETTER 83-28, POSITION 4.5.2 TESTING OF REACTOR TRIP SYSTEM (TAC NO. 53986)
Generic Letter 83-28 (GL 83-28) requested licensees of operating reactors, applicants for operating licenses and holders of construction permits to respond to certain positions resulting from the staff's review of the anticipated transients without scram (ATWS) events at the Salem Nuclear Plant.
'By letters dated September 11, 1984, June 12, 1985 and October 16, 1987, the licensee for GGNS (System Energy Resources, Inc., since December 20, 1986 and Mississippi Power & Light Company before that date) provided, among other things, a response to GL 83-28, Position 4.5.2, regarding testing of the reactor trip system components which cannot be tested during operation without causing a reactor trip.
The NRC staff has completed its review of GL 83-28, Position 4.5.2.
The staff's Safety Evaluation is enclosed. The staff concludes that the licensee's response to Position 4.5.2 is acceptable.
L Sincerely, Original signed by
