GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION (GGNS), UNIT 1 - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING GENERIC LETTER 83-28, POSITION 4.5, REACTOR TRIP SYSTEM RELIABILITY (TAC.NO.-53986)
By letter dated September 11, 1984, the licensee (Mississippi Power & Light Company prior to December 20, 1986, Systems Energy Resources, Inc. on and after that date) provided information regarding the backup scram system for GGNS Unit I pursuant to Position 4.5 of Generic letter (GL) 83-28.
The NRC staff is reviewing the infonnation and finds that additional information is needed to complete its review. The September 11, 1984 submittal stated that on-line functional testing of the backup scram valves, as recommended by GL 83-28, Position 4.5, is not feasible because on-line testing would result in a reactor scram. The staff concludes that modifications to the system to allow on-line testing are not required. However, the staff further concludes that testing of the backup scram valves, including initiating circuitry, during each refueling outage, is appropriate. You are requested to describe, within 30 days of the receipt of this letter, procedures for testing the operability of the backup scram valves that will be performed off-line at each refueling outage.
