DATE 1.0 PURPOSE i

This procedure describes the requirements of and the method used l

l for the ultrasonic thickness examination of materials at Fort l

St. Vrain Station.

2.0 APPLICABILITY l

This procedure conforms to the latest editions and addenda of the applicable codes and applies to the Ultrasonic Thickness Inspection of materials performed at Fort St. Vrain Station.

1 3.0 GENERAL RE0VIREMENTS l

3.1 Personnel performing and/or evaluating ultrasonic l

thickness examinations when using a pulse-echo test l

instrument such as the Krautkramer USL-37 or Epoch 2002, l

shall be qualified minimum Level II ultrasonics in l

accordance with procedure QCIN-4.

l l

3.2 Personnel performing ultrasonic thickness measurements l

utilizing a digital thickness meter such as the OMX-1, l

shall be qualified minimum Level I ultrasonics in l.

accordance with procedure QCIM-4, or shall have had l

training in the theory and operation of digital ultrasonic l

thickness meters.

l 3.3 Electronic apparatus - A pulse echo ultrasonic thickness j

instrument shall be used, or a pulse-echo test instrument l

may be used, such as the Krautkramer Branson USL 37 or l

Panametrics Epoch 2002.

l 3.4 The base metal shall be free of weld spatter, surface irregularities or foreign matter that might interfere with the examination.

Where a weld surface interferes with the examination, the weld shall be prepared as needed.

3.5 The calibration test piece must be made from a material that is ultrasonically similar to that which is to be measured.

For this procedure, P-1 through P-5 materials shall be considered ultrasonically similar.

The calibration test pieces actual thickness must be accurately known.

4.0 CALIBRATION 4.1 Calibration of DMX-1 4.1.1 Insure that the carat under NORM is lit.

If not, depress the function pushbutton

switch, as required, until the carat under NORM is lit.

4.1.2 To select millimeters if the IN indicator is lit or l

inches if the MM indicator is lit, depress the Increment pushbutton switch and the Decrement i

pushbutton switch simultaneously.

4.1.3 If the CAL indicator is not lit, depress the CAL pushbutton switch once.

Observe that the CAL indicator lights.

4.1.4 Apply a small amount of couplant to the test piece and couple the probe to the test piece.

Observe that the coupling indicator lights and the display indicates a stable thickness indication.

l 4.1.5 Using the Increment pushbutton switch and/or the Decrement pushbutton switch as required, increment or decrement the display indication until the display indicates the thickness of the test piece.

4.1.6 If it is desired to record the acoustic velocity of l

the test piece, repeatedly depress the Function pushbutton switch until the carat under MAT'L is lit. At this time, the display indicates the acoustic velocity of the test piece to which the OMX was just calibrated.

The acoustic velocity is displayed in units of X 102 in/sec (IN) or X 108 mm/sec (MM).

Then depress function pushbutton l

switch once to light the carat under NORM.

4.1.7 Depress the CAL pushbutton once.

Observe that the CAL indicator goes out.

The calibration setting is now " locked" against accidental change.

4.2 Calibration of OH-2

4.2.1 Apply a small amount of couplant to the test piece and couple the probe to the test piece.

Observe that the display indicates a stable thickness

{

reading.

4.2.2 Using the adjustment screws inside the top of the unit, increment or decrement ~the display indication until the display indicates the thickness of the test piece.

4.3 Calibration of USK-6, 7 or Equivalent 4.3.1 Employing an IIW block, step wedge or a reference standard, set instrument's sweep range such that CRT presentation represents the desired thickness range as follows:

< 1.0 inches thickness:

Set instrument sweep such that the fifth major division equals 1.0 inch, set delay such that back

-l reflection is at the tenth major division.

> 1.0 inches < 5.0 inches Set instrument such that the second major screen division equals 1.0 inch, set delay such that back reflection is at the fourth major division.

4.3.2 Instrument's gain setting shall be established on the part/ component's base material such that the first back reflection is set at minimum of 80% full l

screen height.

l 4.4 Calibration for Krautkramer Branson USL 37 l

4.4.1 Sweep range calibration for single element l

non-delay type probe.

l 4.4.1.1 Using the basic calibration standard l

described in paragraph 3.5 perform the l

following:

I a)

Couple the probe to the calibration l

standard and using the DELAY control, set l

the first back reflection to "0" on the j

horizontal sweep scale.

Using the FINE, SWEEP control, adjust the l-second -back reflection to read-the l

thickness of the_ reference block.

further adjustment, the first back l

reflection appears at "0" and the second l

back reflection appears at the thickness l

of the reference block on the horizontal f

l sweep scale.

Using the DELAY control, adjust the first l

l 4.4.2 Digital Readout Calibration l

4.4.2.1 Calibrate the instrument as described in l

paragraph 4.4.1.

Set the POS-0FF-NEG switch to POS.

l 4.5 Calibrating the Panametrics Ecoch 2002 When Zero Offset l

and Sound Velocity are Unknown l

4.5.1

$et the sound velocity in the Epoch's status to l

.2320 in/us.

This assumes that the calibration l

standard is made of low carbon, low alloy steel.

l If a material other than low carbon, low alloy l

steel is used, refer to a sound velocity chart for l

the approximate sound velocity.

j l

4.5.2 With no delay and no zero offset, loosely couple l

the transducer to an appropriate side of the l

standard.

The leading edges of the multiple echoes l

shall be evenly spaced at convenient horizontal l

graticule lines.

Adjust the range so the leading l

edge of the last echo falls at its appropriate l

graticule line.

It is quite likely that the l

1eading edge of first echo will not be exactly at l

the horizontal graticule line which represents the l

thickness of the standard.

l 4.5.3 Adjust the zero offset until the leading edge of l

the first echo is exactly at the appropriate j

graticule line.

l 4.5.4 Repeat step 4.5.2 so that the leading edge of the l

last echo is its appropriate graticule line.

1 4.5.5 Repeat steps 4.5.2 and 4.5.3 until all the leading l

edges of the' multiple echoes are at their l

appropriate graticule lines.

l 4.5.6 Adjust the sound velocity so that the range display l

reads correctly.

l NOTE:

Record the value of zero offset and sound 1

velocity.

The value of zero offset may l

be used again for the same transducer if l

the transducer is without a protective l

element.

The zero offset value is a l

measure of the time celay between the l

microprocessor and the initial pulse.

l The value of sound velocity is only j

applicable to calibration standards made l

of the same material.

j 4.5.7 If it is desired to use the automatic readout for l

thickness, the refracted angle of 0 degrees must be l

entered into the Epoch's status.

Distance to the i

echo can only be measured if the echo falls within l

the gate of the instrument.

Thickness is read to l

the leading edge of the first echo that falls l

within the gate.

The gate may be adjusted to. read

{

l other signals that occur at greater distances in l

l the test material.

The readout function is an l

l automatic feature of the Epoch and the data san be l

confirmed on an IIW or similar calibration l

standard.

j 5.0 SCANNING l

j NOTE: For the OMX-1 unit, insure that the carat under NORM is l

l lit.

If not, depress the function pushbutton switch as j

required until the carat under NORM is lit.

l 5.1 Apply a small amount of couplant to the examination surface and couple the probe to the surface.

l 5.2 Insure that the probe is essentially oriented at 90* to the examination surface to insure an accurate reading.

Obtain the smallest stable reading.

l l

5.3 Readings for pipe shall be taken every 90 unless otherwise specified.

6.0 RECORDS 6.1 A report and location drawing shall be generated and shall contain the following as a minimum:

6.1.1 Line no.

6.1.2 Location of readings 6.1.3 Meter used, including probe type 6.1.4 Calibration block used including material type-6.1.5 Calibration thickness 6.1.6 Calibration temperature 6.2 Records shall be completed and administered per the requirements of procedure QCIM-2.

The Station Service Request (SSR) system addresses any plant repair 3

l including the repair records for piping and components in the high energy systems.

There is presently no way to electronically separate out the repair records for the high energy systems.

A manual review of the entire SSR system to separate out the desired information would be impossible in the time frame allotted for this response.

Therefore, historical information was gathered by interviewing experienced personnel in the PSC Production, Engineering and QA 4

s departments who are, involved in plant repair efforts.

The repairs i

identified by these interviews are listed in table 6-1.

As can be seen from this

table, these interviews reported only repairs to piping immediately downstream of pressure breakdown

{

devices due to cavitation induced erosion.

It should be noted that in general this type of type erosion is initiated subsequent to the deterioration i

of the associated pressure breakdown device.

result of any performance characteristics change appreciably as wearing of the pressure breakdown device.

Such changes in j

performance characteristics will be noted by plant cperations, who in

(

turn will issue an SSR.

When maintenance is perfomed on the l

prossure breakdown device, the downstream piping is visually j

inspected for erosion and repairs made if necessary.

The interviews did not report any repairs due to inservice degradation in other j

pressure boundary areas of the high energy piping.
