This refers to the routine safeguards inspection conducted by {

Messrs. J. Kniceley, T. Madeda, and D. Galanti of this office on August 3-7,

1987, of activ. ties at LaSalle County Station, Units 1 and 2, authorized by

NRC Operating Licenses No. NPF-11 and No. NPF-18 and to the discussion of our j

findings with Mr. G. J. Diederich and other members of your staff at the 1

conclusion of the inspection.  !

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during

the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a sele:tive -l

e examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and

( interviews with personnel.

During this inspection, certain of your activities appeared to be in violation

of NRC requirements, as described in the enclosed Notice. The inspection

showed that action had been taken to correct the identified violation and

to prevent recurrence. Our understanding of your corrective actions are

described in Paragraph 6 of the enclosed inspection report. Consequently,

no reply to the violation is required and we have no further questions

regarding this matter at this time. However, we request that within 30 days

of the receipt of this report, you address in writing our concern identified

in the first paragraph of Section 2 of the enclosed report.

Areas examined during this inspection concern a subject matter which is exempt l

from disclosure according to Part 73, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, l

Section 73.21(c)(2). This information must be handled and protected in l

accordance with the provisions of 10 CFR 73.21. Consequently, the enclosure

to this letter and our report of this inspection will not be placed in the

NRC Public Document Room.
