SUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-327/87-43 AND 50-328/87-43

This refers to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) routine resident  !

inspection conducted by K. M. Jenison on June 12 - July 5,

'

1987. The

inspection included a review of activities authorized for your Sequoyah

' facility. At .the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed

with those members of your staff identified in the enclosed inspection report.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within

these areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures

- and representative records, interviews with personnel, and observation of

activities in progress.

One unresolved . item'was identified in the inspection report which concerns the

ability to demonstrate proper operation of the interlock which prevents the

containment spray isolation valves from opening until the pump starts. This

interlock is bypassed during surveillance testing and therefore does not under-

go operational testing. This matter will be pursued during future inspections.

In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," Part 2,

Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, a copy of this letter, its enclosures,

and any reply will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room. l
