Dear Mr. Butler:
In reference (1), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the existing analog-based Safety Parameter Display System for operational use at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Units 2 and 3 until the design and insta?.intion of l
the new computer-based Safety Parameter Display System is l
complete.
A schedule for the submittal of a safety analysis for the design of the new Safety Parameter Display System j
was requested in the referenced (1) correspondence.
In reference (2) Philadelphia Electric Company 4
stated that a schedule for submittal of the safety analysis for the design of the new Safety Parameter Display System would be submitted.upon selection of a. vendor.
A qualified j
vendor has been selected and a safety evaluation can be prepared and submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission gh ge hk by November 30, 1987.
The plant process computer and Safety Parameter Display System will be operational following the third hq[
refueling outage after 1985 for both Units 2 and 3.
Based on our current outage schedule, this translates to a 1990/1991 completion date.

The computer hardware for Unit 3 will be installed during the upcoming Unit 3 outage scheduled for late 1987.
1 The new and old process computers will then be operated in parallel for one cycle, with the new computer system i
undergoing testing and being used for operator training.
1 Following the check-out operation, the installation of the new system will be considered complete after any temporarily located equipment is placed in its final location during the

next refueling outage which is currently scheduled for mid-j 1990.
Utilizing Unit 3 as a guide, this process will be repeated for Unit 2 during the next Unit 2 refueling outage j
scheduled for late 1989.
The parallel test for Unit 2 will i
be run for one cycle followed by final location installation i
which will occur during the following Unit 2 outage scheduled for early 1991.
In summary, the safety evaluation for the Safety Parameter Display System will be submitted by November 30, 1987.
