SUMVARY OF NOVEMBER 19 1987 MEETING ON STEAM GENERATOR 3
TUBE RUPTURE On November 19, 1987, the NRC met with Cor.necticut Yankee Atomic Pcwcr Company
-(CYAPCO) to discuss a now failure mode for steam generator tube ruptures (SGTR).
Based on preliminary analysis Westinghouse determined Haddam Neck to be potentially susceptible to a SGTR similar to the SGTR at North Anna. CYAPC0 stated while some of the assumptions used by Westinghouse were incorrect, CYAPC0 cannot refute the conclusion that Haddam Neck may be susceptible to this.new failure mode. However, CVAPC0 did not believe this is a significant safety problem.
CYAPC0 calculated a susceptibility ratio (SR) number, which is a relative comaa-rision of the conditions of the tubes at Haddam Neck with the conditions of tie failed tube at North Anna. Based on this analysis, two tubes were determined 3
to have a SR greater than one, two tubes were determined to have a ER of one and approximately 50 tubes were determined to have a SR between.9 and 1.
l Therefore, CYAPC0 stated very few tubes are potentially susceptible to this

failure mode. Additionally, CYAPCO believes that its s<ieam generator leakage limit and sampliig frequency would assure shutdown before rupture. CYAPCO, therefore, concluded that this failure mode is a small contributor to the overall risk of steam generator tube leakage.
The staff requested the following information regarding CYAPCO's analyses:

How did CYAPC0 verify that the tubes were supported by the anti-vibration bars? and 2
Provide the 1-D analysis for the calculation of the-susceptibility ratios.
The staff informed CYAPC0 that an IE Bulletin is being prepared for all t'est-inghouse plants concerning this failure mode.
