Subject:

C.Lasba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414 RTD Bypass Loop Flow Measurcent Deat Sir:

l By letter dated June 29, 1987 it was requested that Technical Specification requirement to verify the RTD Bypass Loop flow on an 18-month basis be deleted.

I I

In the justification it wae stated that low flow in the bypass loops would be i

I detected and an annunciator would alarm in the Control Room.

It was also stated that local indicators are available to monitor total flow through the RTD bypass l

manifolds for each loop.

In order to provide additional assurance that there is adequate flow through the bypasa loops, Catawba personnel will verify flow at the local flow monitors on a j

three month (quarterly) inspection frequency.

This check will be started and l

continue to be conducted, when the Reactor Coolant System is at full temperature

{

l and pressure.

l Additionally, a quarterly channel calibration will be performed on the Control Room low flow alarms. This channel calibration was recently. conducted and would not be due again until mid-1989.

Ilowever, in order to provide added assurance I

that these annunciators are operating correctly, the channel calibration will be done quarterly, beginning in late September, 1988.

This letter suppler. rents a letter dated June 29, 1987, as such no license fee is required.
