Docket No. 50-322

Long Island Lighting Company

ATTN: Mr. John D. Leonard, Jr.

Vice President - Nuclear

'

Post Office Box 618

Shoreham Nuclear Power Station

Wading River, New York 11792

Gentlemen:

Subject:

Inspection No. 50-322/87-18

A routine. radiological safety inspection was conducted by Messrs. T. Dragoun

and R..Loesch of this office on September 28 - October 2, 1987, at the

Shoreham Nuclear Power Station. Areas inspected included organization and

management, training and qualifications, high radiation area key control and

the Process. Control Program (PCP).

During a review of your Process Control Program, several concerns were raised

i

that indicate the facility design and associated procedures may need to be

upgraded to support full power operations. Current motbodologies would

require unnecessary dose expenditures during the processing of " hot" high

integrity containers (HICs). These items have previously been identified by

your staff.

-No violations or deviations were identified.

No reply to this. letter is

required. Your cooperation with us is appreciated.
