SUBJECT:

COMPLETION OF LICENSING ACTION FOR GENERIC LETTER 97-04 ON SUFFICIENT NET POSITIVE SUCTION HEAD FOR EMERGE.NCY CORE COOLING AND CONTAINMENT HEAT REMOVAL PUMPS FOR GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 1 (TAC NO. M99994)

Dear Mr. Hagan:

On October 7,1997, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-04, " Assurance of Net Positive Suction Head for Emergency Core Cooling and Containment Hiat Removal Pumps," to all holders of operating licenses or construction permits. The NRC issued the GL to confirm the adequacy of the net positive suction head (NPSH) available for emergency core cooling (including core spray and decay heat removal) and containment heat removal pumps under all design-basis accident scenarios.

In GL 97-04, the NRC staff specifically requested that you provide (ha following information for Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (GGNS):

1. Specify the general methodology used to calculate the head loss associated with the ECCS suction strainers.
2. Identify the required NPSH and the available NPSH.
3. Specify whether the current design-basis NPSH analysis differs from the most recent analysis reviewed and approved by the NRC for which a safety evaluation was issued.
4. Specify whether containment overpressure (i.e., containment pressure above the vapor pressure of the sump or suppression pool fluid) was credited in the calculation of available NPSH. Specify the amount of overpressure needed and the minimum overpressure available.
5. When containment overpressure is credited in the calculation of available NPSH, confirm i

that an appropriate containment pressure analysis was done to establish the minimum l

containment pressure.

j O Q(\\

In response to GL 97-04, you provided the letters dated November 5 (GNRO-97/00107) and December 17 (GNRO-97/00121),1997. These submittals provided the information requested by the GL. The first letter provided the 30-day response stating that the 90-day response would be submitted by January 6,1998, and would be the result of the BWR Owner's Group effort on NPSH calculational methodology. The latter letter pmvided the 90-day response and addressed the 5 areas listed above. You stated that containmerit overpressure was not credited in the calculation of available pump NPSH and that the required NPSH is less than the available NPSH.

You also indicated that all work for the GL has been completed.
