Enclosed is the report of the team inspection conducted by Mr. L. S. Cheung
I
and other NRC inspectors and representatives on July 20-24, 1987 at the Maine
Yankee Atomic Power Station located at Wiscasset, Maine, of activities
authorized by NRC License No. DPR-36.
The team's findings were discussed with Mr. C. D. Frizzle of your staff at the
conclusion of the inspection.
The inspection reviewed your program for
f
establishing and maintaining the qualification of electric equipment within the
j
scope of 10 CFR 50.49. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of exami-
!
nation of selected procedures and environmental qualification packages, inter-
I
views with personnel, observations and a physical walkdown verification of
specific electrical equipment.
Based on the results of this inspection, it appears that one of your activities

was not conducted in full compliance with NRC requirements, as set forth in the
Notice of Violation, enclosed herewith as Appendix A.
This violation has been
categorized by severity level in accordance with the " General Statement of
i
Policy and Procedure for NRC Enforcement Actions, 10 CFR Part 2, Appendix C
(Enforcement Policy 1987)." You are required to respond to this letter and in
preparing your response, you should follow the instructions in Appendix A.
For
another violation (50-309/87-16-16) which was identified by your own staff as
described in paragraph 14.0 of the inspection report, the enforcement is under
review by the NRC. We will inform you of our decision in the future.
Your cooperation with us in this matter is appreciated. We are available to
discuss any questions you have concerning this inspection.
