PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-77-13 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

':0RE SPRAY LINE CRACK INDICATIONS Licensee reported that during the perform 4nce of inservice inspections during the current refueling outage, ultrasonic testing revealed a crack in a 12 inch diameter core spray pipe line.
Radiographic testing confirmed the existence of the crack. The crack is not through wall and is located in the heat affected zone of the pipe veld on a reducer that connects to the vessel safe end.
Plans are to replace the failed line. Repairs are scheduled to begin i
on 2/2/77. NRC is following this problem closely.

Media interest is not expected. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed. A press release is not planned.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from Assistant Plant Superintendent at 9:15 AM on January 24, 1977.
