STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING APPRAISAL l

A routine appraisal of performance under the NRC/ State of North Carolina Environmental Monitoring Contract was conducted on October 5-6,-1987.

A copy of the NRC appraisal is enclosed.

The appraisal included an in-depth assessment of. activities performed and the annual report submitted by the State pursuant to the 1986 contract ar;d a-preliminary review of the State's performance under the 1987 contract.

Results of the appraisal were discussed with members of your staff by Ms. S. Adamovitz during a visit to your office and laboratory on October 5-6,1987.

l The appraisal showed the State met all obligations in the 1986 contract with the exceptions of H-3 analyses in surface waters and I-131 analyses in milk for which both of the required lower limits of detection were frequently.

Appropriate proposed corrective actions are documented' in this appraisal.

No other discrepancies were identified, and the overall performance by the State of North Carolina under the provisions of the contract has been good.
