DEC i 81985 MEMORANDUM FOR: D. J. Sreniawski, Chief, Nuclear Materials Safety Section 2 D. G. Wiedeman, Chief, Nuclear Materials Safety Section 1 FROM: W. L. Axelson, Chief, Nuclear Materials Safety and Safeguards Branch

SUBJECT:

INSPECTIONGUIDANCE.FORPOOLGRRADIATORS-~3 Q:n ~ ~

Enclosed is inspection guidance which our inspectors should use while conducting inspections of pool irradiators (greater than 10,000 curies). It is important to note that this is only guidance and should not be interpreted as license requirements. However, if the inspector determines several deficiencies in the program as a result of this new guidance, then NRC manage-ment should be promptly informed and a corrective action plan should be developed with the licensee. I recommend we attach this guidance as an addendum to our industrial / academic inspection procedure.
