d Dockot Numbar: 50-338 Serial Number : 97-472 Page 2 of 14 Virginia Electric and Power Company North Anna Power Station Unit 1 1997 Refueling Outage 2nd Interval, 3rd Period Introduction This report includes the Interval 2 inservice examinations of Class 1 and C1cas 2, components, piping and component supports that were conducted at North Anna Power Station Unit i from March 8, 1996 to June 9, 1997.
The excminations during the second interval were performed to meet the requirements of ASME Section XI, 1983 Edition thru the Summer 1983 Addenda.
Excmination procedures were approved prior to the examinations being performed.
Certification documento relative to personnel, equipment,' and materials were reviewed and determined to be satisfactory.
In:pections, witnessing, and surveillance of the examinations and related activities were conducted by personnel from the Hartford Steam Boiler Incpection and Insurance Company, One State Street, Hartford, CT 06102 (M.
M. Grace, E.L.
Farrow, and C.A.
Ireland), North Anna Power Station maintenance staff, and the North Anna Power Station technical staff.
Examinations were also performed to satisfy requirements beyond ASME Section XI. Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company was not involved in activities associated with these examinations.
Exam.inntiong Excminations were conducted to review es much of the examination zones as was practical within geometric, metallurgical and physical limitations.
When the required ultrasonic examination volume or area could not be examined 100%, the examination method was evaluated and alternate beam angles or methods were considered in an attempt to achieve the maximum excmination volume.
However, where 100% examination was not possible the excmination was considered 'o be partial and so noted on the examination report.
Where the reduction in coverage was 10% or greater, per Code Case N-460, a subsequent relief request will be submitted.
Some repair activities were performed after the end of the refueling outage, June 9, 1997.
These post-outage activities are included in this rcport rather than the next report to state the extent of completion of the third period second interval examinations.
The post-outage examinations contained in this report will not be reported in the next NIS-1 report.

Resolution of Previous NIS-1 and NRC commitments Tha following is a synopsis of commitments made in the previous NIS-1 cubmittal and their status:

A commitment was made to revise drawing 11715-WMKS-0109D to correct a mark number-of a hydraulic anubber. This change was incorporated in revision 4.

A commitment was made to visually examine A-179 on drawing 11715-WMKS-0111XD during the next period, Third Interval, First Period, as required by Subparagraph IWF-2420(b). The Third Interval is scheduled to begin on December 24, 1998, therefore no examination was performed this period.

Page 14 of 14 Enubber Replacementa A total of 82 small bore snubbers were replaced as part of the Tech. Spec.
Functional test program.
Out of the 82 anubbers tested there were no functional test failures.
Duo to functional test failures in previous refueling outages, one small bore snubber had to be removed for retest.
The functional test for this onubber was acceptable.
Ono small bore snubber was replaced and functionally tested to resolve a visual anomaly-of low fluid level. The as found fluid level of 30% was dotermined to be acceptable. Functional testing was not required but was performed as a precautionary measure due to limited accessibility of the enubber. The functional test for this snubber was acceptable.
A total of two large bore snubbers were tested as part of the Tech Spec.
Functional test program. Out of the two large bore snubbers tested there were no functional test failures.
A total of two large bore snubbers were functionally testad for information. These additional tests were performed due to test failures experienced during the last Unit 2 refueling outage. These two snubbers had not been tested since installation. One large bore snubber, 1-RC HSS 0100 failed the in place functional test for no lockup in compression. The snubber was removed and bench test and found to be acceptable. The cause of the in-place failure was not detennined but is believed to be due to the more conservative nature of the in-place test methodology. The snubber was replace under Repair and Replacement 97 214.
Snubber removal and installation for the Tech. Spec. Functional test and visual inspection programs are considered maintenance activities and not
-ASME Section XI repairs and replacements.
The ANII was not involved in the review of this work.
STEAM GENERATOR EDDY CURRENT In steam generator "A" 1804 tubes were inspected full length with bobbin probes. Three hundred twenty six tubes were also inspected at the hot leg
" top of tubesheet" transition with RPC probes. Tubes inspected with bobbin and RPC probes were inspected to satisfy the requirements of ASME Section XI and-Technical Specifications. The remaining tubes were inspected for information only. No reportable indications were revealed by this in pection.
