Statement of work

.c v

Revision 1 - Statement of Work for Modification No 2 Under NRC Contract No. NRC-04 96 060 l

l The objectives of this contract modification are to: (1) upgrade TRAC B to meet Scientech Quality Assurance (SOA) Standards by providing a wider range of code assessment cases, and (2) provide a preliminary assessment of the couphng of 3D neutronics with core thermal hydraulics and assist the NRC/RES during its participation in the OECD Main Steam Line Break (MSLB) Benchmark Exercise. The following tasks are incorporated into the statement of work under the subject contract.

Task 2 4.1 Upgrade TRAC B to SQA Standards 7

An effort to upgrade TRAC B to meet SQA standards is central to the TRAC B maintenance

)

effort, in this Task, additional code testing and assessment will be undertaken which will enable issuance of a code version that meets the minimum QA standards for software I

l development. The effort to upgrade TRAC B to SOA standards to be done under this FY97 contract modification will be to fully perform calculations and document the results using the standard test matrix and a judicious sampling of developmental assessment problems which are derived from the CSNI assessment matrix. The assessment performed under this effort is l

considered to be partial and is for the purpose of supplying a timely version of TRAC-B (version O.5) to be produced under the SQA Program.

(i)

Develop and obtain NRC approval of a list of candidate code assessment problerhs,

  • Estimated Effort: 0.5 staff month Estimated Completion Date: 1 month following initiation of this subtask (ii)

Obtain all applicable and available data, in electronic and paper format, from the various available sources of this information (e.g. NRC Data Bank, INEL QA files, etc.). For those cases where electronic data is unavailable, the paper format data is to be scanned into elf '.ronic format.

Estimated Effort: 0.5 staff month Estimated Completion Date: 1 month following initiation of this subtask (iii)

Perform and document the testing and developmental assessment in a report that describes the problem and/or facility and the test objective, evaluates and discusses the code performance for key parameters of interest, and identifies the capabilities and limitations / problems with recommendations for improvement or correction.

Estimated Effort: 4 staff months Estimated Completion Date: 6 months following contract modification approval

l ImMC Preliminary Assessment and Assistance The NRC is participating in the OECD MSLB Benchmark Exercise being organized by the Reactor Physics Committee of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEACRP) as well as the CSNI Principal Working Group 2 (PWG2). The international benchmark problem chosen for simulation is a Main Steam Line Break (MSLB), which may occur as a consequence of a rupture of a steam line at the steam generator nozzle. This event is characterized by significant space-time effects in the core caused by asymmetric cooling together with an assumed stuck-out rod during the reactor trip. The simulation of the transient requires evaluation of core response from a multi-dimensional perspective (coupled 3D neutronics with core thermal-hydraulics) supplemented by a 1D simuistion of the remainder of the reactor coolant systems.

l The purpose of this Task is to provide a preliminary assessment of the coupling of 3D t

  • neutronics with core thermal-hydraulics and provide assistance to the NRC di c.s its participation in the OECD MSLB Benchmark Exercise. The results of this task will also provide important initial information needed for performance of Optional Task 50, should this optional task be exercised.

Subtask SC(i)

Provide a Letter Report describing the major features of the most recent versions of the 3D kinetics codes NESTLE and PARCS. The Letter Report should include a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of using either code coupled to TRACP (Version 5.4.25) with regard to the NRC participation in the OECD MSLB Benchmark Exercise. Within 30 days of receipt of the report, the NRC PO willidentify the kinetics code to be used in the remainirig '

optional subtasks should the NRC decide to exercise any of these optional subtasks.

Estimated Effort 0.25 staff-month Estimated Completion Date: 0.5 month following initiation of this subtask Optional Subtask SC(ii)

Dependinc on the NRC def...c on which kinetics code is to be coupled with TRACP (Vers 1 5.4.25), either install the most recent DOE version of TRAC-P/ NESTLE or proceed on to subtask (iii), become familiar with the coding, and reproduce the calculations summarized in the DOE reference materials.

Estimated Effort: 0.5 staff-month Estimated Completion Date: 1 month following approval of the kinetics code under subtask (i)

Optional Subtask SC(iii)

Depending on the NRC decision on which kinetics code will be used, either reconfigure the arrangement in subtask (ii) to that using TRAC-P version 5.4.25 and NESTLE version 5.02, or implement TRAC-P/PARCS, and reproduce the calculations summarized in the DOE reference materials.

w V

Estimated Effort: 0.5 staff-month Estimated Completion Date: 1 month following initiation of this subtask Optional Subtask SC(iv)

Assess the state of the transient solution methodology in the subtask (iii) version of the coupled '

code. This willinclude a detailed comparison of the source code and the transient neutronics equations as solved in the kinetics code, and identifying any needed corrections. Unless there is a valid justified reason for doing otherwise, the basic solution methodology (i.e. explicit internal coupling between TRACP and NESTLE /PARCS), should not be modified. Once the necessary corrections are identified and implemented, the neutronic part of the coupled code should be assessed using the standard EPRI HERMITE transient problem. A thorough documentation of this test case should be made.

Estimated Effort: 1.0 staff month Estimated Completion Date: 2 months foilowing initiation of this subtask Optional Subtask SC(v)

Further assess the coupled code using the NEACRP PWR spatial kinetics Benchmark problems. A thorough documentation of this test case will be made. Additionally, a thorough documentation of the changes made to the codes as well the issuance of a Users Manual, describing the kinetics code input as well as additional input required for TRACP, shall be undertaken.

)

Estimated Effort: 1.0 staff-month Estimated Completion Date: 2 months foPowing initiation of this subtask Optional Subtask SC(vi)

Provide assistance to the NRC during its performance of the OECD MSLB Benchmark Exercise. Up to 1 staff month Estimated Effort: 1.0 staff month Estimated Completion Date 12 months following contract modification approval
