REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR RESOLUTION OF GL 97-04 ISSUES AT THE CLINTON POWER STATION (TAC NO. M99975) r

1. In response to GL 97-04 question 1, it is stated that the net positive suction head (NPSH) analyses assumed the emergency core cooling system (ECCS) strainers were 50% cloggad with a resultant 1-foot head loss through them, which is consistent with the purchase specification

.equirement. Has this assumption been confirmed given the information provided in NRC IN 97-277

2. In response to GL 97-04 question 2, it is stated that the General Electric process diagrams specify a required NPSH of 5 feet while the vendor performance curves shows the required NPSH to be 2 feet. Which NPSH requirement is used in the calculation of available NPSH?
3. Question 2 of Generic Letter 97-04 requested the identification of the required NPSH and available NPSH for the pumps that take suction from the suppression pool followin.g a design basis loss-of-coolant accident or secondary line break. The response to question 2 discusses the ECCS, not the individual pumps that make up the ECCS. Specify the required NPSH and available NPSH for the core spray pumps, the residual heat removal pumps, and the h

containment spray pumps, as applicable.

4. In response to GL 97-04 question 3, recently perfccmed bounding analyses were discussed which do not replace the Clinton Power Station design basis NPSH analysis. The equation used for the bounding analyses appears in Attachment 2 to your response and does not appear to be correct. Specifically, the staff is concerned with the addition of P, and the R(H,- H ) teim.

g Provide a more detailed explanation of this equation and specify the units used.
