SUBJECT:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit Nos.1 & 2; Docket Nos. 50-317 & 50-318 Detailed Control Room Design Review Schedule for Resolving Human Engineering Discrepancies

(a) Letter from A. E. Lundvall, Jr., to 3. R. Miller, Detailed Control Room Design Review, dated December 31,1984 (b) Letter from A. E. Lundvall, Jr., to E. 3. Butcher, Jr., Detailed Control Room Design Review Supplemental Program Plan, dated November 1,1985 Gentlemen:

This is to inform you of changes in our schedule for resolving Category I and 11 NUREG/CR-1580 Human Engineering Discrepancies (HEDs). We provided this schedule in our Summary Report (Reference a).

We have resolved 121 NUREG/CR-1580 HEDs originally scheduled for completion by fall 1986. The remaining NUREG/CR-1580 HEDs (30 for fall 1986,39 for spring 1988, and 41 for fall 1989) were transferred into the Supplemental Program Plan (Reference b) because of the demands placed on instrumentation-and-controls engineering by other NUREG-0737 items (e.g., R.G. 1.97 Review, Safety Parameter Display System, Inadequate Core Cooling Instrumentation). The Supplemental Program is underway using the guidance from NUREG-0700 as opposed to its draf t, NUREG/CR-1580.

Our DCRDR Team determined that this change will provide for more effective resolution of the remaining HEDs by using NUREG-0700 guidance instead of NUREG/CR-1580 guidance. This is consistent with the NRC staff position that the guidance of NUREG-0700 supercedes that of NUREG/CR-1580. Our DCRDR Oversight Committee reviewed and approved this change.
