October 24, 1986 Docket Nos.:
50-313 and 50-368 i
Mr. T. Gene Campbell Vice President Nuclear Operations Arkansas Power & Light Company Post Office Box 551 Little Rock, Arkansas 72203
Dear Mr. Campbell:
SUBJECT:
DETAILED CONTROL ROOM DESIGN REVIEW (DCRDR)
This letter transmits the Technical Evaluation Reports (TERs) pertaining to the above subject for Arkansas Nuclear One, Units 1 and 2.
The TERs are pre by our consultant, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) pared and present the results of the review of your submittals, the site visit and the meeting with members of your staff.
With respect to the DCRDR for Unit 1, the TER concludes that the only open item remained to be resolved relates to the possible overuse of color in the control room. As discussed with your staff, this item was to be reviewed by the NRC staff. On September 23, 1986, we did review the use of color as it was utilized in the ANO-1 Simulator Room and determine it to be acceptable for application in the ANO-1 control room. This will be addressed in our future Safety Evaluation (SE) related to the DCRDR for AN0-1.
.With respect to the DCRDR for Unit 2, you are requested to provide additional infonnation to resolve those items described in the TER as not satisfactory.
Your response should provide the schedule for correcting all safety significant HED's, the justifications for not correcting certain HEDs, and the justifications for not completing certain corrections within two refueling outages following submission of the Sumary Report.
In addition, you are requested to include the text of the August 7, 1986 presentation. We request you response within 45 days from the receipt of this letter.
The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter affect l
fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P.L.95-511.
