Dr. Grant W. Thomas Department of Agronomy N-122 Agricultural Science Bldg. - North Lexington, KY 40546-0091

Dear Dr. Thomas:

Thank you for your letter and accompanying graph and reprint.

The information is very timely, given the efforts to gain control over the water budget at the Maxey Flats site.

As an added benefit, however, was the comparison of different agricultural areas in terms of potential movement of moisture and nutrients beyond the root zone.

The graph you prepared comparing monthly precipitation and i

evapotranspiration confirms observations made at the Maxey Flats site in NRC-funded researcf1 studies that there is a large amount of water moving through the soil, and trench covers, during the period November - March.

J Again, thank you for your assistance.

I may need to discuss more specific information related to the evapotranspiration curve, particularly how it varies with changes in vegetative cover or slope, in the near future.

Sincerely,

./
