Dear Messrs. Conn and McClure:

Shapar GErtter/EDO 2142 We are pleased to receive the proposed program of investigations Eleins and analyses for the Maxey Flats site enclosed with your letter of BClausser (2)

June 15s 1977.

We agree with what you propose in principle, and Secy (3) we are new in the process of examining the specifics of the proposal to integrate it with other low-level waste studies. As indicated in your letter, we anticipate that the studies which we support will provide'information generally valuable to the development of future criteria for low-level waste management. We plan to have members of the'NRC staff visit Mr. Harden of your Department of Human Pasourcos in the near future to discuss in detail our support of your program.

We think the funding of such State studies by the !iRC to satisfy a common need is an important step forward in improving Federal / State relations in the area of radioactive wasta management. Development of a workable national program for management of low-level waste can most effectively be accomplished through close Federal / State cooperation.

We will keep you informed on our future actions related to your proposal.

If you have questions regarding the status of your proposal, they s

may be referred to Dr. Michael Bell, Chief, Low-level Waste Branch,-

(301) 427-4240.
