Subject: Inspection Report No. 50-293/86-29
This letter refers to the routine safety inspection (50-293/86-29) conducted by
Dr. M. McBride and Mr. J. Lyash of this office on August 5,1986 to September 8,
1986 at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Areas
examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I Inspection
Report which is enclosed with this letter.
We are' concerned about the lack of effective and aggressive followup by plant
management to two incidents during the inspection period. These incidents in-
volved an inadequate investigation following the release of unsurveyed and
potentially contaminated material from the site and the excessive time required
for repair of instrument lines needed to provide an indication of shutdown
cooling flows in the control' room. These incidents demonstrate the need for
your continued attention.
Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were observed.
