SUBJECT:
fiRC Till-2 CLEAliUP PROJECT DIRECT 0PdTE HEEKLY STATUS REPORT FOR SEPTEliBER 22 - 28, 1986 1.
DEFUELIffG One additional end fitting has been removed from the reactor vessel and stored in a shielded 55-gallon drum.
Problems with faulty in-vessel lighting and high turbidity are causing poor visibility and impeding defueling progress.
Efforts continue to restore water clarity in the reactor coolant system (RCS). Operation of the vacuua systcm with polypropylene bag filters proved to be of limited usefulness. Test runs with a deep bcd diatomaceous earth filter installed in the Defueling Watcr Cleanut
'9 stem (DUCS) were completed and the test data is being evalua.
4 The liRC staff approved GFUti's plan for temporary end fitting s torage. This allows GPUll to store a planar array (ia. no stacking) of 55-gallon drums containing end fittings and incidental attached fuel in a designated storage area on the 347 ft. elevation of the reactor building. The staff had previously approved storage of a single drua.
GPUll has had difficulty getting end fittings through the openings in fuel canisters. Since the end fittings currently impede free access to the debris bed and crust, removal and storage of end fittings will facilitate the defueling progress.
2.
PLAtiT STATUS The reactor remains in long tem cold shutdown, vented to the ataosphere. Core cooling is by natural heat loss to ambient building atoosphere, average air ter:.pcrature of 56*F.
The average RCS tceperature is 76*F.

Ef!VIR0!TEllTAL 1:0HITORING US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sample analysis results show that T!!I site liquid effluents are in eccordance with regulatory limits, imC requirements, and The City of Lancaster Agrecuent.
The Lancaster water sacple taken at the water works river intake and dnalyzed by EPA consisted of a seven day. composite senple taken Septcuber 7 - 13, 1986. A gama scen detected no reactor related activity.
Till water sanples tcken-by EPA at the plant discharge (includes Units 1 and 2) to the river consisted of seven daily ccaposite sar, ples taken frca September 7 - 13, 1986. A gamu scan detected no reactor related activity except.
The EPA analyses of the NRC cutdoor air semole for the period Septeeber 19 - 25, 1936 showed that concentrations of Cs-137 or.d I-131 were below the lewar lioit of quantitative detection (LLD) for the system. The LLD varies arcund a value of 1E-13 uCi/cc.
