T MAY 8 s Igg 7 Docket No.: 50-271 Mr. R. W. Capstick Licensing Engineer Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation 1617 Worcester Road Framingham, Massachusetts 01701

Dear Mr. Capstick:

Subject:

CORE SPRAY SAFE - END INSPECTION Re: Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station By letter dated lanuary 12, 1987, Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation (VYNPC) infonred us of their plans to inspect the two overlay repaired core spray safe-ends instead of replacing them during the upcoming 1987 refueling outage. We have reviewed VYNPC's analysis and proposed plans. We find VYNPC's proposed plan to inspect the repaired safe-ends, instead of replace them, acceptable for the next fuel cycle, providing that inspection results are satisfactory.

By letter dated May 7,1987, VYNPC provided us with inspection plans for the core spray safe-ends. We also reouest that the results of the inspection be provided to us as soon as possible, but no later than three weeks after plant startup following the 1987 refueling outage.

A copy of our Safety Evaluation is enclosed.

Sincerely,

/d Vernon L. Rooney, Project Manager Project Directorate I-3 Division of Reactor Projects I/II
