WBJELI: TAhKEE k%i. EAR POWER STATION - ADEOUACY OF STATION ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM VOLTAGES By letter dated August 29, 1986 you submitted a study of the adequacy of electrical distribution syst'm voltages.

In a letter dated April 10, 1987, you responded to staff questions.

In that letter you connitted to steady-state testing to obtain plant data for validation of your computer model of the system.

The staff concludes that some transient testing is also required to determine the voltage droo and recovery when a large motor is started. As discussed in a phcne conference on April 30, 1987, a sufficient test would be a start of a low pressure safety injection (LPSI) pump on one of the 480 volt emergency buses, with no other loads on this bus (this would be the normal starting condition for this pump). Normal plant loads (consistent with plant conditions at the time of the test) would be on the rest of the distribution system. The staff recommends that you ensure that the instrument or device you select for monitoring and recording the response (bus voltage, power factor, etc.), be sufficiently sensitive to capture the drop in voltage as the motor starts, and trace (or otherwise track) the voltage magnitude versus time as the motor comes up to speed.

Satisfactory comparison of the test results with the computer results of this loading condition would be sufficient to confirm the adequacy of the computer code and modeling used in your study.
