J. Ridgely/B. Mann Requested Completion Date: February 12, 1982 Review Status: Awaiting Infomation The enclosed draft Safety Evaluation Report covers those portions of the WNP-2 Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) for which the Auxiliary Systems Branch has pri.na.y responsibility.

The evaluation includes all amendments to the FSAR up to and including Amendment No.17. The following areas have not been resolved and require further evaluation:

1.

Section 3.5.1 - Internally Generated Missiles The applicant has stated that his evaluation of all potential missile sources is not complete. The applicant indicated during a meeting with the staff on October 7,1981, that the evaluation would be complete in the second half of 1982. We will report resolution of this item in a supplement to this SER.

2.

Section 3.5.2 - Structures, Systems, and Components to be Protected from Externally Generated Missiles The applicant has not committed to meeting the guidelines of SRP 3.5.1.4 with respect to providing tornado missile protection from the utility polc.

We will report resolution of this item in a supplement to this SER.

Section 4.6 - Functional Design of Reactivity Control Systems l

l The applicant has not responded to our request for information regarding l

the Office of Analyses and Evaluation of Operational Data report entitled.

' Safety Concems Associated With a Pipe Break in the BWR Scram System" and j

the effects of failure of several valves in the control rod drive system.

We will report resolution of these items in a supplement to this SER.

Section 6.7 - Main Steam Isolation Valve Leakage Control System The applicant has not verified that the leakage rates used are as specified i

in the Standard Technical Specifications. We will riport resolution of i

this item in a supplement to this SER.

5.

Section 9.1.3 - Spent Fuel Pool Cooling and Cleanup System The applicant has not verified that the heat loads used in the evaluation of the bulk pool temperature and the cooling system are based on Branch Technical Position ASB 9-2.

We will report resolution of this item in a supplement to this SER.

6.

Section 9.1.4 - Fuel Handling System The applicant has not provided a complete response to our concern of lifting (dropping) an object lighter than a fuel assembly with the handling tool over the spent fuel which could have a greater hinctic energy. The applicant has not responded to our generic letter nor committed to implement the interim actions prior to the final implementation of NUREG-0612.

Section 9.4.8 - Diesel Generator Area Cable Cooling System The applicant has not provided the results of an analysis of the loss of the cable cooling system as the result of a tornado missile entering through the louvers or loss of the air handling unit as a single failure concurrent with a tornado and the resulting loss of offsite power. We will report resolution of this item in a supplement to this SER.

Section 9.4.12 - Makeup Water PumD House Heating and Ventilatina System The FSAR states that the vents and louvers are missile protected by reference to FSAR Section 3.5.

Section 3.5 does not address the makeup water pump house vents and louvers. The missile protection information must be provided either in a revised Section 3.5 or revised Section 9.4.12.
