Catawba Nuclear Station Docket No. 50-413; 50-414
' Inspection?offLimitor@ne i
ValveuMotor Operators:
Dear Sir:
Attached is a list of all safety-related Limitorque valve motor operators (VMO), including six'(6) valve operators tagged as Unit 1 which are shared and required for Unit 2 operation located in a harsh environment for Catawba Unit 2.
The VMO's are identified by tag number, function and t
location.
Also listed is an indication whether the operator was ordered under a " good" or " suspect" shop order number and the disposition of the'VMO in terms of inspection or
-i de-energized in its safe position.
t Inspections of the limit switch compartment wire was initiated as a result of inspections conducted at McGuire
~
Nuclear Station.
The McGuire inspections revealed that up to 3~ jumper wires per VMO supplied by Limitorque could not be identified.
The Catawba VMO inspections indicate that only certain Limitorque shop order numbers supplied the unidentifiable jumper wires.
Prior to' inspection a total of 41 actuators were identified'as being supplied under suspect shop orders, while 69 actuators were supplied under good shop orders.
As of August 8, 1986, all 46 inside containment VMO's have been inspected.
Prior to inspection, 17 actuators were identified as being supplied under shop order numbers suspected to contain unidentifiable jumper wire.
Of these 17, 15 did contain unidentifiable jumper wire, and 2 contained Duke Power qualified jumpers installed during actuator installation.
The remaining 29 VMO's (63% of total) were supplied under " good" shop 7egder_,Aumb.ers and e
inspection confirmed that each containied oc h MantQi'able, 8611 32 860008 1

O A total of 24 actuators located-outside containment have been identified as " suspect" based on shop order number.
Of the 24 " suspect" actuators located outside containment, 19 have'been inspected and 5 have been de-energized in their safe position.
13 of the 19 contained unidentifiable jumper wire, the remaining 6 contained Duke Power qualified jumper wire installed during actuator installation.
All unidentifiable jumper wire has been replaced with qualified jumper wire.
An additional 6 unit shared actuators with Unit 1 designated tag no.'s were identified as " suspect" and as being required to support Unit 2 startup.
All 6 were inspected and unidentifiable jumper wire replaced.
A total of_40 actuators were supplied under " good" shop order numbers and are located outside containment.
Inspection of these actuators will be complete on or before September 19, 1986.
Catawba Unit 1 is currently in Mode 3.
Prior to restart, all actuators supplied under " suspect" shop order numbers, that can not be put in a safe de-energized condition, will be inspected.
Actuators supplied under " good"' shop order numbers will be inspected during the upcoming refueling outage.
Very truly yours, d
