Cimarron - Sensitivity Analysis of BA-I and W AA Groundwater Flow Models for Storativity
Background
Two pumping tests, one in the Western Alluvial Area (WAA) and one in Burial Area 1 (BA-I) and numerous slug tests have been performed at the project site in Cimarron, Oklahoma.
Analyses of the resulting data using various methods have generated a wide range of hydraulic conductivity (k) and storativity (S) - or storage coefficient - values. Additionally, the pumping test of Well GE-WA-01 in the WAA may not have sufficiently stressed the aquifer to obtain valid results for either parameter. The project team has concluded that although an acceptable value for k of the W AA aquifer may be achieved through the performance of additional slug tests, a value for S cannot be determined from this method; and, that the groundwater flow model should be analyzed to determine its sensitivity to changes in S.
The storage coefficient from the pumping test in the alluvial portion ofBA-1 ranged from 0.001 to 0.01. The storage coefficient that is currently stored in both groundwater flow models is 0.01, a value at the low end of those typically observed in unconfined aquifers.
The storage coefficient for the alluvial aquifer, calculated according to the Cooper-Jacob method from the pumping test performed in Well GE-WA-01 in WAA was approximately 0.88 (a value far above that typically observed in unconfined aquifers) based on observations in the pumping well, and averaged 0.22 for the pumping well and five nearest observation wells. The Cooper-Jacob method generally assumes that pumping tests in small diameter wells do not yield valid storage values; therefore if the storage calculated for the pumping well is ignored and the storage values calculated for each observation well are averaged, a more reasonable value of 0.08 is obtained.
A review of the Final GW Modeling Report (ENSR, 2006) reveals no discussion of storage coefficient in the text. Table 4 (WA Summary of Model Inputs) of this report indicates the specific yield (unconfined storativity or Sy) is 0.001, referencing it as a "default" value. The report also indicates the specific storage (product of storage and aquifer thickness or Ss) to be 0.001; assuming an aquifer thickness of 10 feet would result in Sy of0.01, the value actually utilized in the model; however all data previously collected in the W AA and BAO 1 suggest that the aquifer is considerably thicker than 10 feet. This brings into question the assumptions used for storage in ENSR's model. The porosity is also input as 0.01 (or 1 per cent), a value far below what is anticipated for a sandy alluvial aquifer. Porosity will need to be adjusted prior to

Methodology The auto-sensitivity feature in Groundwater Vistas was utilized for this exercise. This feature allows the user to select a model property (k, S/specific yield, leakance, etc.) and use multipliers to change it sequentially. When the auto-sensitivity analysis is performed, the software automatically adjusts the selected property and performs a series of model runs using the adjusted values based on the multipliers assigned.
Because the Sy of 0.01 currently set in the model is at the low end of the typical range, the sensitivity analysis used multipliers of 2, 5, 10, 20 and 30 to incrementally increase the storage values to the maximum observed value of 0.3. Targets were established throughout each model domain to track changes in head for each model run, including one located as near as possible to the test pumping well GE-WA-01 in W AA. Targets were set in Layer 1 in the WAA model and in Layer 3 in the BA-1 model.
Results The sensitivity analysis indicates that the model may not be sensitive to changes in Sy. None of the sequential increases in this parameter produced changes in head at the targets in either model (see graphs below); this is an unanticipated result because increasing the value of Sy from the Q)

This could be due to other inappropriate input parameters; however the values established for k in the W AA model are reasonably close to those derived from the pumping test ofGE-WA-01.
Although the model does not appear to be sensitive to changes in Sy, the W AA model Sy should nevertheless be adjusted to a value based on calculations from the W AA pumping test in well GE-WA-01. Consideration should also be given to adjusting the Sy value for the BA-1 model, although it is currently within the range typically observed in unconfined aquifers. However, as noted in ENSR's Burial Area #1 Groundwater Assessment Report, the aquifer test in Well O2W56 in BA-1 was performed during high water table conditions resulting in a semi-confined or "transiently" confined condition, potentially yielding lower storage values.
Model changes are suggested prior to making model runs for design purposes. Slug testing will be performed in the W AA to establish k values for that area. Additionally, Sy may be adjusted following revision of k. Prior to performing particle tracking, porosity will be revised in both models for the layers representing the alluvium to more accurately reflect conditions in the alluvial aquifer; porosity in the other layers for both models should also be reviewed and revised if necessary.
