MAR 2 81986 License No. SNM-394 Docket No.
070-00435 Control No. 104272 Lafayette College ATTN:
H. Gene Moss Associate Provost Easton, Pennsylvania 18042 Gentlemen:
This is in reference to your application dated August 18, 1985 to renew License No. SNM-394.
In order to continue our review, we need the following additional information:
1.
In Item 5 of your application for renewal of your license you have indicated that you will leak test your sealed sources using a Gieger-Mueller tube to check the swabs for contamination, however, you have not indicated how you have determined that your Nuclear Chicago 151A counter is capable of detecting the presence of 0.005 microcuries of plutonium and uranium.
Please submit the procedures you use and the results you have achieved for determining the capability of your instrument.
2.
You have not indicated in your application the type of survey and the instrument you will use for your sealed source survey.
Section 4.6.3.2 of Regulatory Guide 10.3 (enclosed) suggests the type of survey that should be performed for the sealed sources you possess.
Please confirm that you will perform such a survey.
3.
The NRC does not recognize an instrument check source calibration as a thorough calibration procedure.
Section 4.5.5 of Regulatory Guide 10.3 (enclosed) suggests a calibration procedure that the NRC finds acceptable and a calibration frequency of 12 months would be more appropriate for a facility such as yours.
Please confirm that you will follow an equivalent procedure.
4.
In your application you have not stated that personnel dosimetry is required to be worn by personnel using your sealed sources.
Section 4.6.2.1 and 4.6.2.2 of the enclosed guide suggests that an appropriate dosimeter be worn by personnel using the sealed sources.
Please confirm that you will require users to wear personnel monitoring that is capable of evaluating exposure due to neutron radiation or submit an appropriate evaluation of expected exposures from the proposed use.
