Control No. 104212 Application for Renewal of License #SNS-394 With reference to Docket or Reference No. 070-00435 dated August 13, 1980 and the letter dated July 16, 1980 from Winfield Keck applying for last renewal:

1.

Licensee is unchanged:

Head, Department of Physics, Lafayette.

(That individual is currently Professor David L. Hogenboom.)

2.

Sources, their form, and amounts are unchanged. However, we believe that the 0.02 millicurie plated alpha source is uranium oxide, not plutonium, and is a Nuclear-Chicago Corporation Model R-6 plate used for calibrating rate meters, as explained in Professor Keck's letter.

3.

Authorized use is unchanged.

4.

The Coaditions stated in Docket No. 070-00435 will be complied with and require no modification except for #12 which should be updated to reflect changes in personnel at Lafayette College as follows:

Licensed material will be used by, or under the supervisioa of, David L. Hogenboom, Ph. D., Professor and Head of the Physics Department, has had a course in nuclear physics at Pennsylvania State University, has taught modern physics courses at Lafayette.

Anthony D. Novaco, Ph.D., Associate Professor, has had courses in nuclear physics at Stevens Institute of Technology, teaches course in modern physics at Lafayette.

David M.

Rehfield, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, experimental nuclear physi-cist with much post-doctoral experience at Brookhaven National Laboratory and McGill University, teaches advanced laboratory at Lafayette.

G. Lyle Hoffman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, has studied nuclear physics at Dartmouth College and has taught laboratories on radioactive decay and neutron activation at Lafayette.

Bradley C. Antanaitis, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, has studied nuclear l

physics at Northeastern University and has taught laboratories on radio-active decay and neutron activation at Lafayette.

Laylin K. James, Ph. D., Professor, has studied physics and physical chemistry.with degrees from University of Michigan and University of Illinois and has performed neutron activation experiments and is trained in the use of the neutron howitzer and associated safety procedures.

Guy J.

Consolmagno, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, has studied physics with degrees from MIT and University of Arizona and has been instructed in the use of,the neutron howitzer and associated safety procedures.

5.

The section on equipment facilities, and instrumentation in Professor Keck's letter of July 16, 1980 is still applicable except as follows:

1.

The Nuclear Chicago Model 2112 counting rate meter with AP-4 alpha detector is no longer operable. The leak tests are performed at 6-month intervals by wiping the source cylinder and bottom of the well in which the source is stored with filter paper dampened with ethanol.

The wipes are sent to RSO, Inc., P. O.

Box 1526, Laurel, MD, 20707 for testing capable of detecting any leak of 0.005 micro-curies of pluton-ium or uranium. Test reports are kept on file.

RSO, Inc. is licensed by the NRCc to test radioactive materials.

2.

Dates of the leak tests and use of the neutron howitzer are recorded in a hard-cover ledger, which is kept with the howitzer at all times.

Only che individuals listed in #4 above are authorized to open the howitzer and raise the source and they are required to wear a dosimeter whentloing oc and to record the readings before and after use.
