EVALUATION OF RECIRCULATION PUMP ROOM DUE TO AN OIL FIRE AND THE PREVIOUS DIL COLLECTION SYSTEM EXEMPTION (TAC 60779)
Re: Big Rock Point Plant By letter dated July 1, 1986, Consumers Power Company provided a response to NRC concerns regarding a previously issued exemption to the 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix R, Section 111.0 requirement for an oil collection system to be installed on the reactor recirculation pumps. During subsequent review of the exemption by NRC staff members, while conducting an Appendix R audit, an error was identified in certain calculations for temperature rise for the recirculation pump room due to the ignition and burning of lubricat-ing oil from the recirculation pump.
After a review of the information provided in the July 1,1986 letter, the NRC staff has found the conclusions reached in the original exemption for the oil collection system remain valid.
A copy of the staff safety evaluation is enclosed.
