Attachment "A" provides the description of the failure'of Braidwood Diesel Generator 1DG0lKB to meet surveillance starting criteria.

The annotated failure in Attachment "A" of the 1DG0lKA diesel generator occurred in September, 1986 prior to the formal

. implementation of reference (a).

1DG0lKA has completed the requisite surveillance testing and has been declared operable.

Attachment "B"

provides a summary of diesel ~ generator 1DGolKB's performance since the successful completion of pre-operational testing.

.Braidwood Station's;1B diesel generator is currently being run on a weekly. basis per. operating surveillance 1BwCS 3.1.1.2.a-2.

On December 9th at 1820 hours0.0211 days 0.506 hours 0.00301 weeks 6.9251e-4 months 1B diesel generator was started. The diesel generator's output breaker did not-close when given the signal from the control room. After attempting to close the breaker again, the diesel generator was ' shutdown per normal operating procedures.

The 1B diesel generator was declared inoperable. This failure was the seventh since the completion of pre-operational testing.

The breaker's circuitry and linkages were inspected and troubleshooting was performed by Station electricians. The breaker functioned properly throughout all the troubleshooting phases.

Three successful load tests have been completed since the failure.

The 1B diesel generator will be started weekly for a 20 week duration per Technical Specification Table 4.8.1.

The diesel generator was declared operable following troubleshooting and a successful surveillance run on December 10, 1986.

The corrective action taken to address the seven existing failures have been successful in preventing the recurrence of identical failures. Due to the relative diversity of the failures no trends have been established, and general, major corrective actions are not warranted at this time. The fifth and sixth failures resulted from stopwatch start times of greater than ten seconds.

These are believed to have been caused by operator error.

However, due to the lack of information available, the cause cannot be definitely attributed to operator error. Therefore Braidwood Station is conservatively considering the two starts failures.

The diesel generators are inspected during every operability run. Any problems that develop are corrected in a timely manner.

Braiducod Station believes that this approach is appropriate to maintain proper diesel generator availability and operability.

Braiducod Station is confident that, through the weekly operability surveillance runs and continued close examination of the engine and its compcnents, the diesel generator's reliability can be demonstrated.

The 1A and IB diesel generators have met all testing and operability requirements of regulatory position C.2 of Regulatory Guide 1.108.

The 1A diesel generator has experienced one valid failure since the completion of pre-operational testing. The 1A diesel generator's ability to provide electric power to engineered safety feature equipment has been demonstrated reliable.

Braidwood Station strongly believes that its ability to meet license requirements for an operable emergency power supply will be maintained in the future.
