Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP) Report for
Salem Units 1 and 2
This refers to the NRC assessment of Salem Nuclear Generating Station, conducted
by this office and subsequently discussed with your staff at a meeting on
February 18, 1987. The NRC Region I SALP Report, as corrected, is provided as
an enclosure to this letter. A list of attendees at the above management
meeting is also enclosed.
We understand that you have elected not to provide a formal response to the
SALP Board Report which was forwarded to you on January 20, 1987. Therefore,
the corrections made to this report are only editorial in nature.
Our assessment of the operation of Salem Units 1 and 2 is that your performance
has improved. However, we believe additional attention is needed to reduce the
number of challenges to safety systems. Also, the efforts you have initiated to
improve engineering support to the station are important and should continue.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a), a copy of this letter and its enclosures
will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room. No reply to this letter is
required. Your actions in response to the NRC Systematic Assessment of
Licensee Performance will be reviewed during future inspections of your
licensed activities.
