Dear Mr. Sieber:

N. Thompson

Subject:

Approval of use of Updated ASME Code Edition in IST Program for Peaver Valley Unit 1 (TAC 61257)

By letter dated April 1,1986, you submitted your new Inservice Testing Program and associated relief requests for the second ten-year interval. Subsequent to that submittal, we approved an extension of your first ten-year interval by approximately one year (letter, April 28,1986). You indicated that if the request for this extension was granted, you would seek approval to use a later version of the ASME Code for the balance of the first interval, in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(4)(iv).

Approval is hereby granted to immediately use the 1983 Edition through the Summer 1983 Addenda of the ASME Roiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55alg)(4), until September 20, 1987, the end of the first IST interval.

You should review all existing pump relief requests and assure that the relaxation in pump testing frequency allowed by the 1983 edition of the Code does not modify or invalidate the basis for any of the existing relief requests which have been approved by the NRC. You are also reminded that the 1983 edition of the Code is more stringent in the number of pump parameters to be measured during inservice tests (see Table IWP-3100-1). In accordance with 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(41(iv),

all requirements of the later version of the Code must be met.

Our review of your second 120-month IST program and relief requests is ongoina.

Those results will be provided at a later time. If you have additional questions, please contact your Project Manager, Mr. Peter Tam (301) 492-9409.
