REGISTRY OF RADI0 ACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO.: NR19201090 DATE: August 7, 1968 PAGE 2 0F 3 OEVICE TYPE: Fill-Level Gauge Source Holder

  • DESCRIPTION: .

This source holder is in the shape of a closed steel cylinder 6-1/2" in diameter and 7-1/4" in height, mounted (with its longest axis vertical) on a 1/4" thick s teel " bottom cover". The bottom cover is attached to the cylinder with 8 screws. The 1/4" thick steel top cover is welded to the cylinder which has a wall thickness of 1/4". A mounting bracket is welded to the cylinder wall. The unit is designed to be water tight.

The source of radiation is mounted at the approximate center of a cylindrical shield consisting of two Mallory-1000 cylinders fitted together one on top of the othar. The lower shield section includes the beam port and suitable machined openings for the mounting of the Mallory-1000 source rotor. An outer lead cylinder with a wall thickness of 1-3/8" completes the shielding at the side of the unit. The source at the edge of the rotor is moved 45*, in a horizontal plane, t'etween the "On" and "Off" positions by the application of power to.the rotary solenoid mounted at the bottom of the shield assembly and coupled to the rotor. .The solenoid acts against a return spring which returns the source to the shielded position when power is interrupted.

The device has a fan-shaced collimator, 1/2" wide with an included angle of 33*,

measured downward from the horizontal at the top of the source.

Internally mounted micro-switches activate "On" and "Off" red and green l'ights at the control console which is usually located remote from the device. Qual, parallel wired, red "On" lights are used.

LABELING:

A metal label 3-3/8" by 2-3/16" attached to the outside of the device 90* from the cable connector bears the following:

" CAUTION: RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL Cobolt-60 mc Date of Measurement Model No. 35-0307 BRUN SENSOR SYSTEMS, INC., COLUMBUS, OHIO"

.The label is basically yellow in color with black lettering and a magenta radiation symbol. -

REGISTRY OF RADI0 ACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO.: NR1920109U DATE: August 7, 1968 PAGE 3 0F 3 DEVICE TYPE: Fill-level Gauge Source Holder EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

In accessible areas at one foot from the surface of the device are 4.3 mr/hr or less with a 25 millicurie, cobalt-60 source in the "Of f" position. A radiation level of 8 mr/hr exists over a small area in the region of the beam port which-is inaccessible with the unit installed.

LittlTATIONS AND/0R OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

The device was evaluated on the basis that it will be mounted flush to the side of a steel mold thereby preventing access to the beam of radiation and reducing radiation levels in the forward direction to about 0.1 mr/hr. If other applications are proposed, an evaluation of radiation levels in the forward direction will be necessary.

The user is instructed by Brun Sensor Systems, Inc., to avoid tampering with the device containing the cobalt-60 source. Brun Sensor Systems, Inc. , has also said that they will install and relocate the source holders and perform radiation surveys at the time of installation.

Since an "on-off" indicator is not located at the source shield and since the control console may be remote from the shield, consideration must be given to exposure of persons not aware of the exposed position of the source.

Cobalt 60 (up to 35 millicuries es Asthesourceholdercddponent an AECL C168 source) of a fill-level gage DESCRIPTION:

This sour e holder is in the shape of a closed steel cylinder 6 1/2" in diameter and 7 1/4" in height, mounted (with its longest axis vert $ cal) on a 1/4" thick steel " bottom cover". The bottom cover is attached to the cylinder with 8 screws. The 1/4" thick steel top cover is welded to the cylinder which hap a wall thickness of 1/4". The source of radiation ic mounted at the approximate center of a cylin-drical shield consisting of two Mallory-1000 cylinders fitted together one on top of the other. , the shielding at the side of the unit. The source at the edge of the rotor is moved 45* , in a horizontal plane, between the "On" and "Off" positions by the application of power to the rotary solenoid mounted at the bottom of the shield assembly and coupled to the rotor. The solenoid acts against a return spring which returns the source to the shielded position when power is interrupted.

The device has a fan-shaped collimator, 1/2" vide with an included angle of 33*, measured downward from the horizontal at the top of the source.

Internally mounted micro-switches activate "On" and "Off" red and green lights at the control console which is usually located remote from the device. Duel, parallel wired, red "On" lights are used.
