REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO.: NR-8034-D-809-S DATE: September 29, 1997 PAGE 2 OF 5 DEVICE TYPE: Fill Level Gauge Source Holder DESCRIPTION:

This source holder is in the shape of a closed steel cylinder 6-1/2 inchas (165.1 mm) in diameter and 7-1/4 inches (184.2) in height, mounted (with its longest axis vertical) on a 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) thick steel " bottom cover". The bottom cover is attached to the cylinder with 8 screws. The 1/4 inch thick steel top cover is welded to the cylinder which has a wall thickness of 1/4 inch. A mounting bracket is welded to the cylinder wall.

The unit is designed to be water tight.

The source of radiation is mounted at the approximate center of a cylindrical shield consisting of'two Mallory-1000 cylinders fitted together one on top of the other. The lower shield section includes the beam port and suitable machined openings-for the mounting of the Mallory-1000 source rotor. An outer lead cylinder with a wall thickness of 1-3/8 inch (34.9 mm) completes the shielding at the side of the unit. The source at the edge of the rotor is moved 45**in a horizontal plane, between the "on" and "off" positions by the application of power to the rotary solenoid mounted at the bottom of the shield assembly and coupled '

to the rotor. The solenoid acts against a return spring which returns the source to the shielded position when power is interrupted.

The device has a fan-shaped collimator, M-inch (12.7 mm) wide with an included angle of 33*, measured downward from the norizontal at the top of the source.

Internally mounted micro-switches activate "on" and "off" red and green lights at the control console which is usually located remote from the device. Dual, parallel wired, red "on" lights are used.

REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO t NR-8094-D-809-S DATE: September 29, 1997 PAGE 3 OF S DEVICE TYPE: Fill Level Gauge Source Holder LABELING:

A metal label 3-3/8 inches (85.7 mm) by 2-3/16 inches (55.6 mm) attached to the outside of the device 90' from the cable connector bears the following:

CAUTION: RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL Cobal.t-60 mc Date of Measurement Model No. 35-0307 BRUN SENSOR SYSTEMS, INC., COLUMBUS, OHIO The label is basically yellow in color with black lettering and a magenta radiation symbol.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

In accessible areas at one foot (304.8 mm) from the surface of the device radiation levels are 4.3 mR/hr (43 pSv/hr) or less with a 25 millicurie (0.925 GBq), cobalt-60 source in the "off" position. A radiation level of 8 mR/hr (80 pSv/hr) exists over a small area in the region of the beam port which is inaccessible with the unit installed.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.

The device shall be tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.

  • REVIEWER NOTE: The user was instructed by Brun Sensor Systems, Inc., to avoid tempering with the device containing the cobalt-60 source. Brun Sansor Systems, Inc., had also said that they would install and relocate the source holders and perform radiation surveys at the time of installation.

  • REVIEWER NOTE: The devices were evaluated'on the basis that they_will be mounted at the side of a steel mold thereby preventing access to the beam of radiation and reducing radiation levels in the forward direction to about 0.1 mR/hr (1.0 pSv/hr) . If other applications are proposed, an evaluation of radiation levels in the forward direction will-be necessary.
  • REVIEWER NOTE: Since:an "on-off" indicator is not located at the source shield and since the control console may be remote from the shield, consideration must be given to exposure of persons not aware of the exposed position of the source.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

i This device was originally approved for licensing purposes on August 7, 1968, by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) . The Model 35-0307 Fill-Level Gauge Source Holder is no longer manufactured

.and. distributed by Brun Sensor Systems. Brun Sensor Systems a materials license terminated January 23, 1973, and the company was acquired by Inlastrial Nucleonics Corporation that same month ~.

There-is-insufficient information on-file for this device to perform a safety evaluation.- Therefore, this certificate is being taken to inactive status without further review based on-the original review and' approval issued by the AEC.
