NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE March 1986 At the onset of the March 1986 reporting period, reactor power was 80% Rated Thermal Power (40 MWe-net). The reactor was coasting down towacds the scheduled refueling outage.

Shutdown for refueling commenced on March 17, 1986._ At 2150, when the station loads were being shifted to the reserve feed supplied by offsite. power, the IB 2400V Reserve Feed Breaker did not close, but the IB 2400V Main Feed Breaker did open, de-energizing the IB 2400V Bus and causing a reactor scram from 72%

power. Maintenance was performed on the IB 2400V Reserve Feed Breaker.

Refueling outage activities performed during March included defueling the reactor, installing 9 new control rods, draining the reactor vessel for maintenance, Inservice Inspection, instrument calibration, and preventive maintenance. Major maintenance activities included installing a new generator plant battery, work on Shutdown Condenser valves, replacing a nozzle on the No. 3 Feedwater Heater, troubleshooting a control rod drive mechanism, relocating Overhead Storage Tank piping, installation of Overhead Storage Tank level indication, installation of a turbocharger on the 1A Alternate Core Spray Diesel, installation of other facility changes and performance of corrective maintenance items.
