William D. Travers, Director THI-2 Cleanup Project Directorate

SUBJECT:

flRC THI-2 CLEANUP PROJECT DIRECTORATE WEEKLY STATUS REPORT FOR SEPTEliBER 15 - 21, 1986 1.

DEFUELING Renoval of the interaals vent valves continued; seven of the eight

)

valves have been removed. The remaining valve hold-down has stripped threads and will have to be cut with special tooling.

Removal of the vent valves provides an improved access path to the reactor coolant system loops and the lower reactor vessel head.

Poor visibility continues to impede defueling progress. Attempts were made to improve water clarity using a bag type filter installed in the Fines / Debris Vacuun System. The licensee is evaluating the data from tests of the filter.

2.

PJLANT STATUS 4

The reactor renains in long tern cold shutdcwn, vented to the atmosphere.

Core cooling is by natural heat loss to ambient building atmosphere, average air temperature of 55 F.

The average reactor resistance temperature detector reading is 71*F.

The airborne radioactivity on the defueling platfona above the reactor vessel is about 8.0 E-7 uC1/cc tritium and 1.1 E-12 uCi/cc particulates, predominately cesium-137 and strontium-90. About 15 feet of water over the core region and 6 feet over the carousel holding the defueling canisters provide shielding.

3.

ENVIRONMENTAL f:0NITORIfiG US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sample analysis results show that Ti1I site liquid effluents are in accordance with 8609250362 860922 PDR ADOCK 0D000320 R

Septenber 22, 1926 Frank J. lliraglia HRC/T!!I-86-094 regulatory liaits, fiRC requirenents, and The City of Lancaster Agreaaent.

The Lancaster water sample taken at the water works river intake and analyzed by EPA consisted of a seven day cocposite sanple taken August 30 - Septerher 6, 1986. A gama scan detected no reactor related activity.

TMI water sanples taken by EPA at the plant discharge (includes Units 1 and 2) to the river consisted of seven daily composite sanples taken from August 30 -~ September 6,1986. A gama scan detected no reactor related activity except fcr the sanple taken August 31 to Septeober 1.

This sample contained detectable I-131 at a level of 2 pico curies per liter. This was equal to the 1-131 levels utected at the intake which indicates an off islend source.

The EPA analyses of the fiRC outdoor air sample for the period September 11 - 19, 1986 showed that concentrations of Cs-137 and I-131 were belcw the lower limit of quantitative datcction (1.LD) for the system. The LLD varies around a value of 1E-13 uCi/cc.

4.

AUXILIARY AND FUEL llAhDLII;G BUILDIliG ACTIVITIES Start-up testing of the sludge transfer systen continues.

llands-on decontamination continues in the annulus area between the recctor building and fuel handling building.

Hands-on decontauination of the "A" Bleed Tank Room and flushing of the Seal Injectier Valve Roon was completed.
