Under sponsorship of the German Ministry for Research and Technology, the research staff of the GKSS facility in Hamburg, FRG are conducting an extensive series of multivent, full-scale steam tests to study the late time phenomena occurring in a Mk II-like pressure suppression system following a hypothetical loss-of-coolant accident. Under the terms of the combined US-FRG Containment Information Exchange Agreement, the U.S. NRC provides technical support in the form of processing, reporting, and evaluation of the test data through contract with the Lawrence Livennore National Laboratory. Dr. McCauley as project leader of this activity, will continue technical liaison with the GKSS personnel for purposes of progress in advanced modeling and evaluated data n(ds of the NRC Mk II Containment Long Term Program.
Following his return from Hamburg, he will brief' members of the NRC staff on the GKSS test program activity. As part of this continuing work, sinilar travel is anticipated through mid FY82.
In particular, this trip is required in order to (a) obtain detailed study, evaluation, and correlation of new GKSS-PSS data not otherwise available to NRC for several months, (b) provide participation in the International Specialists Meeting on BWR Containment sponsored by Dr. Schultheiss, Director of GKSS (June 1 - 3, 1981).

Under sponsorship of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (STA), research staff
. of Reactor Safety Lab 1 Japan Atomic Energy REsearch Institute (Tolai Establishment) are conducting an extensive series of containment safety experiments at the full '
scale Mark II CRT facility. Under terms of the U.S./STA, Japan agreement, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory provides technical liaison t'o this program for the U.S. NRC in the form of consultation with CRT staff and for purposes of progress .
in advanced modeling and evaluated data needs of the NRC MK II Containment Long Term Program. .
During this trip, as project leader of this activity, Dr. McCauley will continue technical liaison with the CRT staff. In additi'on, he will participate in joint meetings in Japan with representatives of the Japan MK II Owner's Group. Following his return to the U.S., he will brief members of the NRC staff on the CRT program activities. As part of this continuing work, similar travel is anticipated through
. mid FY82.
- In particular, this trip is required in order to a) obtain. detailed review and assessment of new test data which will not otherwise be available, b) provide immediate detailed. review of results obtained from some 23 new pressure transducers supplied on loan through this Liaison by the U.S. NRC for use in the CRT facility tests of FY81/82. c) provide immediate consultation regarding preparation for and conducting of instrumented-hammer facility tests; these will be provided through the Liaison by the U.S NRC. '
