Docket Nos.: 50-387 and 50-388 MEMORANDUM FOR: Richard W. Starostecki, Director Division of Project and Resident Programs Region I FROM:
Hugh L. Thompson, Jr., Director Division of Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
SUBJECT:
UPCOMING NRR FIRE PROTECTION DOCUMENTATION AUDIT AT THE SUSQUEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (SSES)
On March 18-22, 1985, NRR plans to visit the SSES site to discuss with the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company (PP&L) the basis PP&L has for acceptability of the SSES fire protection measure as installed with respect to PP&L's commitment to meet Section III.G of Appendix R of 10 CFR Part 50.
Based on discussions with PP&L and the preliminary findings of your staff's fire protection audit we believe, as a minimum, additional deviations from Appendix R Section III.G and/or plant modifications will be necessary.
Up to this point, the NRR staff has not reviewed PP&L's available fire protection analyses and supporting documentation pertaining to this matter.
PP&L has agreed to make this existing documentation available for NRC staff examination dering the March 18-22, 1985 site visit.
In order to assist us in determining the potential for finding existing protection acceptable with deviations from Section III.G of Appendix R, we need your staff's assistance in assessing the safety significance of any such deviations. This matter was discussed on March 7,1985 with Cliff Anderson of your staff. The purpose of this memorandum is to confirm our request that members of your staff, including consultants involved in the ongoing SSES Fire Protection Audit, who posses the additional expertise necessary for a thorough review be made available for this NRR activity.
