Under' sponsorship of the Japan Science and Technology Agency ((STA), research Tokai Establishment) are Reactor Safety Lab 1, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute conducting an extensive series of containment safety experiments at the full scale Under terms of the U S./STA, Japan agreement, the Lawrence Mark II CRT facility.

Livermore National Laboratory provides technical liaison to this program for the U.S. NRC in the form of consultation with CRT staff for purposes of progress in advanced modeling and evaluated data needs of.the NRC Mk II Conta'inment long term program.

During this trip, as project leader of this activity, Dr. McCauley will continue technical liaison with the CRT staff.

In addition, he will participate in joint meetings in Japan with representatives of the Japan Mk II Owner's Group. Following his return to the U.S.,

he will brief members of the NRC staff on the CRT program activities. As part of this continuing work, similar travel js anticipated through mid FY82.

In particular this trip is required in order to:

.a) obtain det'ailer' review and assessment of new test da.ta which will not otherwise be available.

b) provide imediate consultation re~garding preparation and installation of some 23 new pressure transducers supplied on loan through this Liaison by the U.S. NRC

. for use in the.CRT facility tests of FY81.

c) provide immediate consultation regarding preparation for instrumented-hamer facili t3 tests to be provided through this Liaison by the U.S. NRC mid FY81.
