. .. . . *# p6 MEMORANDUM FOR: Robert E. Alexander, Chief Occupational Radiation Protection Branch, RES FROM: Vandy L. Miller, Chief Material Licensing Branch, FC

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR COMMENTS ON DOCUMENTS REGARDING IMPROVED PERSONNEL D0SIMETRY PROCESSING By memorandum dated November 12, 1985 you requested comments on three documents regarding improve i personnel dosimetry processing. We have reviewed the subject documents and have the following major comments:

1. Several public comments raised the issue about whether " voluntary" dosimeters have to be accredited. The discussion of public comments emphasizes that accreditation is only required for dosimeters which are required by Part 20. Because Part 20 requirements for dosimeters are very general, we believe that it is important to be very specific about our intent. The Federal Register notice and Analysis of Public Comments should be modified to state that accreditation will be required for dosimetry required by Part 20 or license condition, or in cases where licensees have committed in a license application or enforcement action to provide dosimetry.
2. Part 34 specifically requires dosimetry for radiographers and radiogrrpher's assistants. There may, now or in the future, be similar require.nents in other Parts of 10 CFR. Therefore, the rule should be modified to specify that dosimeters required by other Parts of 10 CFR must be accredited.

Other minor editorial comments have been provided directly to the RES Task Leader, Donal? Nellis.
