Dear Mr. Farrar:

SUB.1ECT: CONTROL ROOM HABITARILITY - UTILIZATION OF CHARC0AL ADSORBER MATERIAL By letter dated November 17, 1986, you indicated that laboratory analysis of the charcoal to be utilized in the safety and non-safety grade air filtration units demonstrated an average penetration of 1.5%. This value is higher than the maximum value of 1% which you had committed to by letter dated October 21, 1986. The staff has evaluated this adsorber material and has found it acceptable.

In the same November 17, 1986 letter, you indicated that the carbon provided to fill the last six carbon trays and twenty test canisters is not identical to the type of carbon in the other trays. This charcoal, which is impregnated with TEDA and Kl. is approved by the staff for use at Braidwood Station provided that it is not mixed with the charcoal impregnated with KI alone and provided that the test canisters utilize TEDA and K! impregnated charcoal if the cells utilize TEDA and K! impregnated charcoal. ,

The staff's evaluation is enclosed. If any further clarification is needed, please contact the Braidwood Project Manager, Ms. J. A. Stevens, at (301) 492-7829.

Sincerely,

,/S!/
