Subject: SYSTEMATIC ASSESSMENT OF LICENSEE PERFORMANCE (SALP) REPORT FOR
INDIAN POINT UNIT 2
This refers to the NRC assessment of Indian Point Station, Unit 2, conducted by
this office and subsequently discussed with your staff at a meeting on
November 21, 1986. The NRC Region I SALP Report, as corrected, is provided as
an enclosure to this letter. A list of attendees at the above management
meeting is also enclosed.
We understand that you have elected not to provide a formal response to the
SALP Board Report which was forwarded to you on November 17, 1986. Therefore,
the corrections made to this report are only editorial in nature.
Our overall assessment of the operation of Indian Point Unit 2 is that your
management effectiveness has improved. However, we believe additional atten-
tion is needed to lessen the number of challenges to your safety systems. Also,
your efforts to prioritize the backlog of maintenance activities according to
risk significance should be continued.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a), a copy of this letter and its enclosures
will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room. No reply to this letter is
required. Your actions in response to the NRC Systematic Assessment of
Licensee Performance will be reviewed during future inspections of your
licensed activities.
