Kansas Gas and Electric Company P.O. Box 208 Wichita, Kansas 67201

Dear Mr. Koester:

This letter is in reply to your letter of November 7, 1979, where you requested that Region IV state as to what NRC personnel and resources would be available during a radiation emergency at Wolf Creek. The NRC role during an emergency has been under review since the TMI incident and changes in policy may occur, however, our present policy can be stated as follows:

"The role of the NRC during a radiation emergency is that of conducting investigative activities associated with the incident, verifying that emergency plans and procedures have been implemented, and assuring that the public health and safety are protected. The NRC will assist in coordination of Federal response resources and provide to state and local agencies advisory assistance assosciated with investigating and assessing hazards to the public." -

If you have questions with regard to this policy, please contact us.

Sincerely r1 . Se rit  ;--.~ .
