.N Recent information indicates that radioactive material from the chernobyl reactor accident is now near the United States coast at about 30,000 feet.
The most likely means of identifying any fallout from that material over the US will be through precipitation samples. EPA has requested that we ask NRC licensees to provide whatever data they may obtain on rain samples.
epa's sampling network emphasizes air, milk and water. In order to supplement this existing network, NRC would be especially interested in any information on precipitation samples which licensees may obtain and the prompt reporting of the results to the NRC Operations Center (202/951-0550) in accordance with IN 86-32 which was previously sent to each nuclear power reactor licensee.
